Graduation Cermony: Perspectives and Retrospective |

Young graduates along with long-time professionals were honoured during the festive academic ceremony on Friday, April 8th 2011 at the Montanuniversitaet Leoben. Beside 36 graduations and 15 conferrals of a doctorate on young graduates, the ceremony featured the presentation of the golden engineer and doctoral certificates, honouring alumni. Thus, the ceremony provided a wonderful platform "to look at the bases and the roots of our actions in technology more closely", Rector Wolfhard Wegscheider stressed in his speech with the title "Energy Options – Opportunities for Engineers".

For the ninth time, the impressive "show truck" of the Montanuniversitaet Leoben will hit the road once again in order to inform prospective students about the unique study programmes in Leoben. Last year, the tour focused on schools in the eastern provinces of Austria, whereas this year’s tour stops at schools in Vorarlberg, Tyrol, Salzburg and Carinthia, South Tyrol and Bavaria, as well as in Hungary and Slovenia for the first time. The continuously rising number of students demonstrates the great success this publicity campaign has had over the past years.

The vice rectors for the next term of office were appointed in the meeting of the University Council on March 11th 2011. In a unanimous decision, Dr. Martha Mühlburger was appointed ‘Vice Rector for Fincances’, and Univ. Prof. Peter Moser ‘Vice Rector for International Relations’.

Leoben Engineer Receives Environmental Award by Lufthansa Cargo |

Dr. Bernd Oberwinkler from the Chair of Mechanical Engineering at the Montanuniversitaet Leoben has been recognized with an environmental award by Lufthansa Cargo. The “Cargo Climate Award” is awarded to junior researchers and scientists, customers and employees who contribute innovative and creative ideas for a climate friendly development in airfreight. The award ceremony was held for the second time in Frankfurt in early March.

Dr. Petra Staberhofer, die am Außeninstitut der Montanuniversität für die Bereiche nationales Förderungsmanagement und geistiges Eigentum (IPR) verantwortlich ist, ist Anfang März 2011 in Wien für ihre Dissertation mit dem "Rudolf Sallinger Preis" ausgezeichnet worden. Ihre Arbeit "Ein Konzept zum Schutz und zur Verwertung von geistigem Eigentum an österreichischen Universitäten – am Beispiel der Montanuniversität Leoben" wurde damit bereits zum zweiten Mal geehrt: Wissenschaftsministerin Beatrix Karl hatte der Wirtschaftswissenschafterin schon Anfang Februar in Graz den "Ursula-Hendrich-Schneider-Preis" überreicht.

There has been reason to celebrate at the Montanuniversitaet Leoben, as new research facilities have been introduced. In the presence of Dr. Hannes Androsch, Chairman of the University Council, Wolfhard Wegscheider, Rector of the Montanuniversitaet, as well as Dr. Matthias Konrad, Mayor of Leoben, and numerous representatives from industry, research aggregates worth 3.8 million euros were put into operation at the Chairs of Metal Forming, Thermal Procssing and Metallurgy.

Wie kürzlich aus den Medien zu erfahren war, beabsichtigen die Österreichischen Bundesbahnen, die „schnellen Verbindungen Graz-Knittelfeld-Judenburg-Unzmarkt-Murau/Kärnten“ einzustellen, weil „der Knoten Leoben nicht mehr funktioniert (Umsteigen Intercity Graz-Salzburg auf Intercity Wien-Villach)“.
