A comprehensive range of education facilitates various fields of activities for graduates. They can work as engineers on oil rigs and also in development or application in computer simulation. To cover the future demand for petroleum and natural gas there are efforts worldwide to tap new reservoirs and to improve the utilization of already existing reservoirs, for example by improved reservoir management. The complexity of the problems that have to be solved requires that the professionals not only possess technical universality but also sound background knowledge in economics and information technology as well as management skills. The education for petroleum engineers is designed to meet this qualification profile. Petroleum industry acts globally and demands that employees can work in an international environment. This fact is taken into account, for example, English is the language of instruction in all petroleum engineering courses and credits can be transferred for a semester abroad at a partner university. Program descriptionUndergraduate program:Education in engineering basics: semester1-2: mathematics, chemistry, physics, mechanical engineering, computer application and programming, semester 3-4: Focus on geosciences, business administration and economics, specialization in mechanical engineering, semester 5:focus on geophysics, fluid flow, flow through porous media, probe tests, technical basics of deep drilling and petroleum and gas production, semester 6-7: drilling, production and reservoir engineering, additionally petroleum technology, petroleum economics and petroleum geology. First thesis in semester 5 (technical basics of deep drilling and petroleum and gas production), second thesis in semester 7 (planning tasks in petroleum engineering). Internships in petroleum industry with a total of at least 80 workdays are required during the semester holidays. Graduate program International Study Program Petroleum Engineeringafter the undergraduate program, intensification and scientification of knowledge in petroleum engineering, a well-balanced combination of professional education on top level with special fundamental principles, additionally project work with use of industry data and commercial software packages. Student chose one of 3 possible majors: Drilling Engineering: static and dynamic design of borehole construction, dynamics of drilling processes, planning, supervision and evaluation of deep drilling projects under technical end economic aspects; Petroleum Production Engineering: planning, design and maintenance of production systems (from reservoir to tank), HSE, assessment of projects (profitability, consideration of technical progress); Reservoir Engineering: Detailed characterisation of storage capacilty and flow properties of hydrocarbon reservoirs, gas storage facilities, and geothermal fields; estimation of reserves and recovery. Design and development planning for new discoveries and mature fields in the light of modern enhanced oil recovery techniques. Computer-aided construction and parameterisation of three-dimensional reservoir models; numerical simulation of multiphase flow patterns, mechanical, thermal and chemical behaviour of reservoirs and prediction of reservoir performance taking into account geo- and petro-physical data, laboratory measurements and dynamic pressure and flow rate observations from the field. Equipment: Workstations in computer labs where students have access to commercial software packages as used in petroleum industry (reservoir simulators, geomodeling software, well simulation software etc., for courses and for the bachelor and master theses.. Numerous additional work stations for students with private laptops. Typical fields of activities: Work on drilling platforms, as planning engineer in deep drilling engineering, production engineering, reservoir physics and engineering, as well as pipeline construction; management tasks in petroleum industry or apart; many graduates work self-employed as suppliers for petroleum industry. Typical branches of industry: Petroleum syndicates, suppliers and service companies related to petroleum industry, energy industry, consulting engineers, research institutions up to management consulting firms. Graduate program Industrial Management and Business Administration The master program "Industrial Management and Business Administration" has been established for graduates of the bachelor program "Petroleum Engineering" where in addition to professional qualification in natural and engineering sciences also practice-oriented fundamentals in business administration are taught. Students learn common methods of economics and business administration and instruments with intensified research methods. The promotion of those abilities, skills and competences which are needed for coping with practical economic tasks is a focal point. Attention is turned to developing competence for creative problem solving by means of topics and examples from primary industry. Program description: In the first two semesters compulsory subjects must be taken. Then the student can choose compulsory optional subjects from two modules. In the third semester students choose electives of at least 6 ECTS credits and write the master thesis. Equipment/labs: The Department of Economics and Business Administration owns a suitable computer lab which is used for many lectures of the degree program. Special software packages are used in the lectures Quality Management, Business Information Systems, System Dynamics and Simulation, and Environmental Controlling as support and for practice-relevant education. Typical fields of activity: The graduate program is not only a preparation for a career in petroleum industry but also for management-oriented fields of activity in related branches, especially in process industry. Typical branches of industry: Petroleum and natural gas industry, process industry, primary industry, and management consultancy. InfoboxPossible degrees: Bachelor of Science (BSc), Diplom-Ingenieur (Dipl.-Ing.) / Master of Science (MSc), Dr.mont.
