What is the amount of the tuition fees?

Non-degree program students and degree program students (außerordentliche and ordentliche Studierende) at Austrian universities except Austrian students and EU/EEA nationals as well as students with Swiss nationality have to pay tuition fees:

  • all students from other nations than the above mentioned (including stateless persons): EUR 363.36 per semester.

If the tuition fees are paid after the general enrolment period but still within the additional enrolment period (which lasts until November 30th for the winter semester and April 30th for the summer semester), the tuition fees will increase by 10%.

In addition, each semester the Austrian Student Union (= students’ representation body) fee (EUR 14.50) and an accident and liability insurance fee (EUR 0.36) have to be paid. These two fees have to be paid in any case, even if the tuition fees are reduced by the university or the student is exempted from paying tuition fees.

If you are admitted to study at several universities simultaneously, you only have to pay the tuition fee at one university. You, however, have to notify all other universities in writing and inform them at which Austrian university you paid the tuition fee.

Exceptions

The following students may apply for an exemption from paying tuition fees at the latest during the additional enrolment period of the respective semester and subsequently do not have to pay the tuition fees (the Student Union and insurance fees, however, they have to pay):

  • non-degree program students (außerordentliche Studierende) who are admitted exclusively to a university training course/university level course or university preparatory course (Universitätslehrgang and Vorstudienlehrgang) (they have to pay the study fees (Unterrichtsgeld) prescribed for these courses instead);

  • Students in those semesters for which they can prove that they will pursue studies or practical training within the framework of trans-national EU, state or university mobility programs (e.g. Erasmus students, students from partner universities);

  • foreign degree program students according to § 91 Abs. 2 University Act (= who would have to pay tuition fees of 726.72 Euros) whose most recently attended university has concluded a university partnership agreement with the Austrian university or with Austrian universities, respectively, that also provides for mutually exempting students from paying tuition fees;
