In the following section answers to frequently asked questions are found.

Please feel free to contact our staff for further information.

What is the purpose of the colloquium at the beginning of the laboratory course?

The colloquium is a short exam to ensure that the student has the necessary theoretical knowledge for conducting the practical lab tasks in a reasonable and safe way. Lectures and lab courses usually run in parallel. Therefore, a preparation of the basics in advance to the lab courses is necessary.
The basics are explained in the laboratory scripts and in the introduction to the lab course. Note special tips for preparing additional aspects and further literature (text books etc.).

How are lab courses graded?

Every single supervisor grades the students regarding the colloquium, participation in practical work and protocol. At the end of the lab course the grades are discussed within a meeting of Prof. Sitte and the lab supervisors. The final grade is usually determined from the mean of the grades for the single lab tasks.

Why is a positive exam Chemistry I required for participation in the lab courses?

Basic knowledge of aspects from General Chemistry is expected at the beginning of the lab course. Especially formulation of and working with chemical reaction equations are a major prerequisite for passing the colloquium.

Is it dangerous to handle chemicals during the lab course?

No, it is not, provided that the necessary safety precautions are taken. At the beginning of the lab course the participants will be given a special introduction regarding safety in the lab. The safety remarks of the supervisors during the course (use of protective glasses etc.) are to be followed.

Are personal safety glasses and lab coats needed?

The acquisiton of personal safety glasses is recommended. Cost effective saftety glasses can e.g. be obtained from do-it-yoursef stores. The Chair will also provide safety glasses for free use during the lab course. Wearing a lab coat is voluntary.

Will practical knowledge be expected?

No, the proper use of laboratory equipment (pipettes, burettes etc.) and instruments will be explained by the supervisor.
During the practical part students have the opportunity to gain first experience and ask questions. Experimental skills are not a criterion for good grades.

Can I fail in a lab task even though I passed the colloquium?

Yes! For the following reasons:
  • Lack of participation in the practical work
  • Ignorance to questions of the supervisor
  • No protocol handed in, or protocol copied in large parts from other students, significant errors or lacks in the protocol
  • Severe violation of safety instructions in the lab (careless handling of chemicals, eating/drinking/smoking in the lab, etc.)

How do I write a protocol?

Only general tips can be given here, the form of the protocol will depend on the lab task.
  • Formulate the purpose of the task
  • Give experimental details on the procedure including required chemicals and equipment, if necessary a sketch of the experimental setup.
  • Present the results; clearly state how results were obtained
  • Discuss and interpretate the results
