Josef-Krainer-Award presented to MUL student Print
“Did you know that men are not the only well-skilled professionals in a mine, but women are accomplished miners as well?” With these words, the representative of the Styrian Commemorative Work, Dr. Gerald Schöpfer, introduced Dipl-Ing. Dr.mont. Claudia Pfeiler in his laudation. Pfeiler is the first female doctoral student at the Montan University Leoben to receive the Josef-Krainer-Award in recognition of her outstanding dissertation.

The Josef-Krainer-Awards were established in 1973 in remembrance of the head of the Styrian government, Josef Krainer sen. The awards are presented in the fields of social activities, promotion of young talents in education, and for outstanding performances. The award ceremony took place recently in the assembly hall of the Old University in Graz.

Optimized casting procedure for improved steel quality

In her doctoral thesis, which she finished with summa cum laude honours in 2008 , Pfeiler dealt with the entrapment of non-metallic particles within the solid shell of a steel continuous caster.
Non-metallic inclusions in steel can cause material defects and diminish the quality of steel products. Hence, the aim is to segregate these particles by altering the current within the ingot mold before the particles reach the state of solidification in the steel shell.
In the course of her research, Pfeiler developed a 3D model which describes the movement of the non-metallic particles under consideration of different parameters.
“As a Leoben resident and Styrian native, I am honoured and proud to have received a Styrian award as an acknowledgment of my doctoral research “, Claudia Pfeiler said. „For me, this award is a rewarding and wonderful closure of an important chapter.“

Reaching the academic Mount Olympus

Another landmark in her rise to the „academic Mount Olympus“, as Laudator Schöpfer said, is Pfeiler’s research in the area of combustion simulation at the K1-MET Competence Centre "Advanced Metallurgical and Environmental Process Development". The K1-MET is a syndicate of economic and science partners that develops new procedures and technologies for metallurgy and environmental uses.
Pfeiler’s current project aims to research and create ideal conditions for the combustion process in industrial furnaces at different fuel compositions. Simulation models are key in her research, and their results are the basis for the optimum settings and the future design of industrial furnaces in order to achieve low emission standards, high efficiency and high product quality.
Claudia Pfeiler is currently preparing for her postdoctoral lecturer qualification in the area of heat technology in the Chair of Thermo Process Technology at the Montan University Leoben.

Bowling for balance

Claudia Pfeiler balances work and research – not less ambitiously - with professional bowling and music. Her athletic career took off as a junior competitor when she won numerous Styrian and Austrian titles, and could also achieve great success at international tournaments. Pfeiler was and still is regarded as one of the most successful members of the professional bowling club of the Montan University Leoben. However, these days she devotes her passion and free time to her music on the organ.
