For the 6th time, the Festival of Nations will be hosted on Friday, 18th of June, 2010 in Leoben. Students from 61 nations, who pursue their studies at the University of Leoben, will enchant the Leoben main square with dance performances, music and international delicacies. Dances from Bali, India, China and Sumatra, African drums, South American melodies, dazzling outfits and national costumes, as well as culinary specialties from all over the world - these are only some of the ingredients for one of the most splendid international festivals of Austria. From 2 o'clock next Friday, Leoben main square will be a kaleidoscope of colors as the international students of the University of Leoben present themselves in all their cultural diversity. The festival has been organised by the University of Leoben and by the city of Leoben for the 6th time since its conception in 2002. „The main focus of this festival is to break down barriers between different cultures and to promote the understanding of the international students and the citizens of Leoben“, event organizer Cornelia Praschag said. The net profits of the voluntary donations go to a fund that supports international students in emergency situations. „In Europe, there is a tremendous lack of engineers, and the University of Leoben is well aware of the importance to train qualified young professionals“, Cornelia Praschag from the Office of International Relations said. „More and more students from Third World countries depend on financial support due to the overall bad economic situation, the lack of job opportunities, and the strict requirements by the Austrian job market service. However, they would rather earn their money themselves. It is particularly difficult to place African students on the labor market due to prejudice and reservations, and those students attending the University Preparatory Course are not allowed to work at all“, Praschag accentuated.
