"Hellmut Longin Award" presented for the 1st time Print
Three young female scientists are the first recipients of the „Hellmut Longin Award“ at the University of Leoben. The award aims to promote outstanding scientific works in the field of ceramics, and was awarded for the first time at the festive graduation ceremony last Friday, June 25th, 2010. The summer commencement at the University of Leoben honoured the academic accomplishments of 54 graduate students and conferred 13 doctorates.
Dipl.-Ing. Dr. Hellmut Longin, honorary senator and graduate of the University of Leoben, looks back at a long-standing career in leadership positions at internationally operating enterprises in the steel and fire-resistant area, and has acted numerous times as a benevolent sponsor of the “alma mater Leobiensis”.

The Hellmut Longin recipients of 2010 are Dr. Nathalie Kölbl (Chair of Ceramics, research assistant), Dr. Mira-Annika Müller (RHI AG) and Dr. Sandra Vollmann (Chair of Ceramics, research assistant). In the future, the award will be awarded on an annual basis.

„Being a student in Leoben“

In his address at the graduation ceremony, president Wolfhard Wegscheider presented a stock-taking of the student life in Leoben and referred to the "Student Social Survey 2009". „Leoben’s specific and unique features are particularly interesting to us, as they add to the feel-good atmosphere of our university community,” Wegscheider stressed.

The survey has shown that Leoben is Austria’s university location with the youngest student population. Residential costs and care are excellent, as well the opportunity for employment along with studying: a remarkable 20 % of Leoben students find employment directly with the university.
