Topping-Out Ceremony of the Raw Materials Innovation Centre Leoben Print
In the centre of the University of Leoben Campus, the new “Raw Materials Innovation Centre“ [Impulszentrum für Rohstoffe, IZR] is being built in the immediate vicinity of the “Materials Innovation Centre“ [Impulszentrum für Werkstoffe, IZW]. Within a record construction period of only one year, a 7-storey building is being erected that takes full advantage of the narrow plot, creating precisely 3.358 m² of floor area on a plot of only 729 m². In future, the new building will accommodate innovative enterprises and scientific facilities of the University of Leoben from the fields of raw materials.

"In the past years, the demand for raw materials has virtually exploded worldwide. They are playing a more and more significant role in the value-added chain“, the Provincial Counsellor for Economic Affairs and Innovation, Dr. Christian Buchmann, stressed at the topping-out ceremony on Wednesday, August 18th 2010. “The IZR reflects the extensive and traditional research focuses in in Upper Styria and strengthens Styria as a centre of competence in this global branch of industry. The new centre proves that economy and science complement each other welll in Upper Styria, and they truly abide by the spirit of innovation, stimulating economic growth in the region“.

"For the University of Leoben, the Raw Materials Innovation Centre is an important step in strengthening one of the university’s core competences in the cooperation with the industry“, Rector Wolfhard Wegscheider said. „While throughout Europe, university and education resources in the raw materials sector have been cut, Leoben has been investing in this field over the last years, not least because of our realisation of how important raw materials are not only in energy issues, but also in the raised added value of products. The increased cooperation with the national and international economy proves that we are on the right track.”
