Having graduated just recently from the University of Leoben, Dipl.-Ing. Stefan Witschnig has won the poster competition in the categories A (Mechanical Properties) and F (Ceramics) at the Junior-Euromat 2010 in Lausanne. Among 60 participants, he qualified for the finale that comprises the presentation of eight papers. In the course of the finale, he will also have the opportunity to present his master’s thesis in detail. Dipl.-Ing. Witschnig is a Graz native and studied Materials Science at the University of Leoben. His master’s thesis, which was executed in cooperation with SKF in Steyr, was concerned with the testing methods for mechanical strength and toughness of ceramic balls which are used for instance in the bearings of modern wind power plants. Witschnig was required to perform complex analytical and numeric model calculations, and also had to support his findings by means of practical experiments. His method is already used by industry. This successful project has ignited several other cooperations between the University of Leoben and some industrial partners.
