Dr. Achim Bechtel from the Chair of Petroleum Geology at the Universitaet Leoben has received the "Dal Swaine Award". The organisation "The Society for Organic Petrology" awarded the prize, which was presented for the first time this year, for the best publication in 2009 in the fields of "inorganic or organic chemistry or the mineralogy of coals or oil bedrocks".
Bechtel received the award, which will be awarded on a yearly basis in future, for his scientific work on the "Reconstruction of floral changes during deposition of the Miocene Embalut coal from Kutai Basin, Mahakam Delta, East Kalimantan, Indonesia by use of aromatic hydrocarbon composition and stable carbon isotope ratios of organic matter" (Organic Geochemistry 40 (2009) 206-218). "The molecular composition of aromatic hydrocarbons in brown coals was analysed at nine different beds at the Kutai basin in Kalimantan, Indonesia", Bechtel said about his research project. The aim of the study was to reconstruct the changes in the flora of the basin in the course of the Miocene, and to find out if information can be deduced from this on possible changes in the paleoclimate of South-East Asia. "The analysed substances document different quantities of Dipterocarpaceae (wing fruit plants) and other angiosperms for the coal formation. Conifers contributed the coal-forming vegetation in the Middle and Late Miocene to a low degree. The C-Isotopy of the coals is in accordance with angiosperm woods as the origin. In the Late Miocene, a cooler climate favoured the spreading of conifers in the Mahakam delta", Bechtel explained. Bechtel’s co-authors Sri Widodo, Komang Anggayan and Wilhelm Püttmann are from the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main and the Bandung Institute of Technology in Indonesia.
