Search Engine for 55 million data sets Print
With the introduction of a new search engine, the library of the Montanuniversitaet Leoben sets new standards for electronic searches for academic papers and publications. In total, the system, which is being used in the German-speaking world for the first time, accesses half a billion documents.

Following a popular search engine for internet searches, the system in Leoben has been named ‚BUGL’ (German acronym for Library and University Complete Bibliography). The application is provided by the American supplier ‚SerialsSolutions', and is the first of its kind to be used in the German-speaking world. This software was developed under the name‚Summon' by a librarian in Seattle in 2000, and has so far become a worldwide market leader in the field of ‚E-Resource Access and Management Service’.

Adaptation
“It took us about six months to adapt the system to our needs“, Franz Jurek from the University Library Leoben explained. „Although the search engine is already used by about 2000 libraries worldwide, adapting it turned out to be difficult as the catalogue systems in Germany and Austria are different from those in Anglo-Saxon countries“, Jurek said.
For library users however, BUGL opens up new perspectives. „Searching for data is incredibly fast, the density of the results is incredibly high, and in addition the system provides great usability and a constantly growing pool of data“, Jurek, who has already received numerous relevant inquiries of renowned German universities, explained.

Cost-effective system

For the head of the University Library Leoben, Dr. Christian Hasenhüttl, the price-performance ration was the decisive factor for purchasing the system. „Our American partner offers an excellent service, there are constant updates and, moreover, you can access data via your mobile phone“, Hasenhüttl said.
