As the enrolment period closed for the academic year 2010/201, it becomes evident that the Montanuniversitaet Leoben has achieved an all-time high in student numbers. The university is particularly happy with the development of females studying at the Montanuniversitaet Leoben - the percentage of female students has further risen, and now accounts for 23.1 percent which is precisely 1.1 percentage points above the results from last year.

4 percent plus of first year students

„With 515 university students embarking on their bachelor, master and doctorate studies – with 25.2 percent (+2,2) female students –the Montanuniversitaet has achieved a plus of 4 percentage points in comparison to last year “,the head of the Department of Public Relations, Erhard Skupa, said. The downward trend of previous years concerning international students attending the Montanuniversitaet Leoben has ceased as well, and with 13.7 percent, for the first time in a long time, there is a small increase of 1.5 percentage points.

Petroleum Engineering - most popular programme
The highest increase in student numbers this year is recorded for the study programme Petroleum Engineering. „In this case, the enormous support by the industry has positively affected this trend; OMV has done an excellent job promoting its ‘Petroleum Engineering Program of Excellence (PEPE) “, Erhard Skupa said. Furthermore, the study programmes Industrial Logistics and Industrial Environment Protection are still popular among first-year students. Overall, positive developments and increasing student numbers are recorded in nearly all areas. In particular, the jointly organised events with voestalpine in Linz, Donawitz and Kapfenberg have proven successful as student numbers in Material Sciences and Metallurgy have increased.

Consistent student marketing
Erhard Skupa regards the permanent information and course guidance services provided by the Montanuniversitaet Leoben as the main reason for the positive development in student numbers. „Throughout the year, we visit schools in all over Austria - on average every three days - in order to present our excellent and unique study courses“, Skupa said. „In addition, every spring we tour the country with a show-truck in order to promote our study programmes at Austrian high schools“, Skupa explained.
