At the Chair of Petroleum Geology of the Montanuniversitaet Leoben, a research facility, unique in Central Europe, was established with the support of renowned industrial partners. Furthermore, Prof. Reinhard Sachsenhofer received academic honours in China. The Rohöl-Aufsuchungs AG (RAG) donated drilling cores to the of Chair of Petroleum Geology, which is part of the Department of Applied Geosciences and Geophysics at the Montanuniversitaet. The cores feature a total length of about 50 metres and are intended as long-term loans for teaching purposes. In addition, the infrastructure for the core lab and the acquisition of measurement devices, as for example of a gamma-spektrometer, were supported by the OMV AG as part of the PEPE project (Program for Excellence for Petroleum Engineering). The cores represent all the important rock units of the Molasse zone (foothills of the Alps), and provide an overview of the hydrocarbon systems contained therin. Bedrocks, rich in organic material, as well as reservoir rocks (fractured carbonates and porous sandstones of different deposition environments) and deck layers are all represented in the cores. "Drilling cores are the most expensive, but also most valuable source of information for the petroleum geologist, because one can identify the type of rock and analyse the physical and chemical qualities", Univ.Prof. Sachsenhofer, head of the Chair of Petroleum Geology, said. "Further information about rock types and qualities can be obtained from geophysical measurements in the logs; the latter are to be calibrated and examined on the core. Hence, it is important to emphasize that the RAG not only provided the drilling cores, but also the logs relevant for the respective drilling segment." Thus, students of Applied Geosciences and Petroleum Engineering not only receive an excellent overview of the development of the Molasse zone, but also get an insight on hydrocarbon systems and the most important examination procedures (core description, log interpretation). The collection is complemented by "Rotliegend" cores with sandstones which were deposited in a desert climate, and by the carbonate/evaporitic "Zechstein" cores which ExxonMobil were very generous to supply. The rocks of "Rotliegend" contain some of the biggest gas reservoirs of Europe. Academic honours for Prof. Sachsenhofer Prof. Reinhard Sachsenhofer, from the Chair of Petroleum Geology of the Montanuniversitaet Leoben, has been appointed Visiting Professor (honoris causa) by the "School of Earth Sciences" of the Jilin University (Changchun, NO China). The honours reflect the good cooperation between the Chair of Petroleum Geology and the "Oil Shale Lab" of the Asian university which is a leader in the field of eploring Chinese oil shale. "The cooperation will thus support the further expansion of our research concerning 'unconventional hydrocarbons'", Sachsenhofer said. Further information: Univ.Prof. Mag.rer.nat. Dr.mont.
