The six chairs of the Polymer Engineering and Science programme at the Montanuniversitaet Leoben will strengthen their common organisational structure: As a united Polymer Engineering and Science Department, starting January 1st 2011, the chairs can now further enhance their synergies in research cooperations with the industry. These cooperations – in particular within the Polymer Competence Center Leoben (PCCL) – have been highly acclaimed at European level. For the Montanuniversitaet Leoben, the New Year brings about a new organisational structure of the Polymer Engineering and Sciences Institutes. With the official establishment of the Department of Polymer Engineering and Science, the already intensive cooperation of the six chairs (Chair of Chemistry of Polymeric Materials, Chair of Designing Plastics and Composite Materials, Chair of Plastics Processing, Chair of Injection Moulding of Polymers, Chair of Processing of Composites, Chair of Materials Science and Testing of Plastics) will be much facilitated: „We can now offer our entire competence in the area of Polymer Science from a single source to research partners from the industry“, the head of the new Department, Clemens Holzer, said. According to Holzer, even more efficiency and a higher research output is to be expected. Acclaimed Leoben Model The cooperation between science and industry, being significantly influenced and shaped by the Polymer Science programme in Leoben, has become an example of best practice at European level. The Polymer Competence Center Leoben (PCCL), whose scientific partners include Institutes of Polymer Engineering and Sciences at Montanuniversitaet Leoben as well research institutions from the Graz University of Technology and the University of Linz, was recognised recently at the EU conference, "Careers and Mobility of Researchers,” in Brussels. The PCCL is regarded as a best practice model for the new research strategy of the European Union, aiming for more cooperation and more fluidity between university research institutions and industry. „The path that we have taken with the Polymer Engineering and Science Department and with the Montanuniversitaet Leoben in general has been widely recognised and we are on the right track to becoming “cutting edge“, Wolfgang Kern said, scientific director of the PCCL and head of the Chair of Chemistry of Polymeric Material.
