During a festive academic ceremony, Federal President Heinz Fischer conferred the Doctorate of Montanistic Sciences “sub auspiciis praesidentis” on Dipl.-Ing. Ronald Schnitzer.

Only students who have concluded high school and their school leaving exams with distinction, accomplished the best possible results on all exams over the course of their university career, and concluded their doctorate studies as well as their dissertation and viva voce with distinction, are admitted as candidates for a “sub auspiciis” graduation.

Ronald Schnitzer was born in 1981 in Eisenstadt where he attended the Secondary Vocational School of Engineering with a specialization in General Mechanical Engineering. From 2001 to 2006, Schnitzer studied Materials Sciences at the Montanuniversitaet Leoben. His dissertation “Characterization of a Highly Niobium-Containing Intermetallic Titanaluminid Alloy” was done in cooperation with Böhler Schmiedetechnik GmbH&Co.KG. Subsequently, he obtained his Doctorate in Montanistic Sciences. He gained experience as a Research Associate for the Chair of Physical Metallurgy and Materials Testing, which was followed by his research activities at the Christian Doppler Laboratory for "Early Stages of Precipitation" (Department Physical Metallurgy and Materials Testing) starting October 2007. These days, Schnitzer is employed in the private sector.

Schnitzer’s thesis, titled „Structure Quality Relations of Maraging Steel Resistant to Corrosion“, was supervised by Univ.Prof. Helmut Clemens from the Chair of Physical Metallurgy and Materials Testing, and was implemented in cooperation with Böhler Edelstahl GmbH & Co. KG.

In his address, Federal President Heinz Fischer acknowledged the high standards that young scientists set, and mentioned the high degree of consistency and reliability which is necessary for a doctorate sub auspiciis praesidentis. „The Montanuniversitaet Leoben with its unique study programmes provides the answers and solutions for the burning questions and demands of the 21st century“, Fischer said, and expressed his thanks and recognition on behalf of the Republic of Austria to the freshly-graduated Doctor of Montanistic Sciences for Schnitzer’s really extraordinary achievement

Dr. Ronald Schnitzer directed his words of thanks at his family, friends and his supervisor Univ.Prof. Helmut Clemens, and pronounced his appreciation for his years of study at the "alma mater leobiensis" which provided him with the perfect conditions to accomplish his academic degree. „The Montanuniversitaet Leoben is a unique example of great scientific education –something that has been strongly demanded during the latest student protests, and something I wish for all universities in this country“, Schnitzer said.
