Graduation Cermony: Perspectives and Retrospective Print
Young graduates along with long-time professionals were honoured during the festive academic ceremony on Friday, April 8th 2011 at the Montanuniversitaet Leoben. Beside 36 graduations and 15 conferrals of a doctorate on young graduates, the ceremony featured the presentation of the golden engineer and doctoral certificates, honouring alumni. Thus, the ceremony provided a wonderful platform "to look at the bases and the roots of our actions in technology more closely", Rector Wolfhard Wegscheider stressed in his speech with the title "Energy Options – Opportunities for Engineers".

"There is no lack of primary energy sources on earth, not even if the population continues to grow substantially", Wegscheider explained. In terms of sustainability, mankind "should never again rely on evident 'transitional technologies' like nuclear fission or hybrid vehicles. It is important to note that 'Energy Farming' with imported artificial fertilizer and subsidised diesel for tractors for the production of bioethanol or biodiesel the self-sufficient will not provide self-sustaining solutions either. However, with 1018 kWh per year of solar energy on the earth's surface, we have energy levels thousands of times higher than the world’s primary power demand", the rector said. Nevertheless, the "thoughtless transfer and transport of energy" remains problematic. “One thing is for sure, we will need much more scientific development in production, transfer and transport", the rector said, referring to a wide field of activity for young graduates of Leoben: “By introducing the new graduate programme 'Energy Technology', we have created a new milestone in the education of engineers who can contribute to solving problems that mankind is facing."

Introduction of New Professors and & Award Presentation

After the graduation ceremony, four new professors were presented: Mag. Dr.techn. Anton Gfrerrer ("Computational Geometry"), Dipl.-Ing. Dr.mont. Christian Mitterer ("Functional Materials and Material Systems"), Dr.tekn. Dr.mont.h.c. Finn Ouchterlony ("Excavation Engineering and Rock Fragmentation"), and Dr.phil. Johann Raith (“Resource Mineralogy").
Ingrid Karpf, office manager of the Rectorate for many years, was awarded the Archduke Johann Bronze Medal.
