New XPS Spectrometer for Surface and Interface Research Print
The Department of Polymer Engineering at the Montanuniversitaet Leoben has been able to further expand its research infrastructure, as an X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) was put into operation last week. "With this facility, new possibilities for the investigation of surfaces open up", Univ.Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Kern, from the Chair of Chemistry of Polymeric Materials, said.

Now, Leoben scientists can literally "go to the bottom" of various surfaces, as XPS spectroscopy provides an exact representation of the atomic composition. In particular, XPS examinations will contribute to research in functionalized polymers and composite materials, as important information on material prosperities, adhesion forces and reactions at interfaces can be obtained. "This is of vital importance in basic as well as applied research", Kern said. "With the new equipment, the expertise that has already been available at the Montanuniversitaet Leoben can now be supplemented and expanded significantly in the field of materials and surfaces."

The XPS spectrometer was funded through an infrastructure project by the Styrian Future Fund [Steirischer Zukunftsfond]. In the presence of Ing. Eva-Maria Lipp (Member of the Styrian Parliament), Dr. Martha Mühlburger (Vice Rector Montanuniversitaet) and Univ.Prof. Wolfgang Kern, the facility was officially put into operation. Experts from the University of Graz (Prof. Georg Koller) and from the University of Paderborn (Prof. Guido Grundmeier) attended the festive event which was also regarded as an initial point for scientific cooperations with national and international universities.
