Great Interest in Advanced Surface Engineering Print
The seminar "Advanced Surface Engineering" was well received by representatives from a wide range of industry sectors, as surface technologies play a vital role in the fields of tool manufacture, engineering and automotive manufacture as well as in energy and medical engineering. The event was jointly organised by the Montanuniversitaet, Joanneum Research, Materials Center Leoben and NanoSurface Engineering Centre, and took place on April 7th.

Engineers, scientists and executives from industry received first-hand information on process technology, laminated materials, trends and future application fields as well as on the experimental possibilities provided by the organizing companies. Once more, the seminar demonstrated that surface technologies are used increasingly across a variety of business sectors for the production of functional surface coatings and modifications.

The range of coating technologies, the experimental facilities and the expertise in surface technologies in Leoben and its neighbouring community Niklasdorf promoted a clear expansion modern surface technology and its field of application. Today, application ranges from wear protection of tools, friction reduction of components for mechanical engineering, as well as functional layers for modern engine construction and solar technology to biocompatible and bioactive films for medical engineering.

Besides new insights into the field of thin-film technology, the second main focus of the conference was dedicated to plasma and laser-supported procedures for the application of new thick-films.

Distinguished Experts Present at Conference

Besides the speakers from the organizing companies, a number of distinguished experts such as the pioneer of thin-film technologies, Prof. Wolf-Dieter Münz, and representatives from companies such as MIBA High Tech Coatings, Böhler Edelstahl, Rübig and Schoeller-Bleckmann Oilfield Technology reported on their stages of development and application perspectives in the field of advanced surface engineering. The programme was completed with an excursion to the laboratory facilities in Leoben and Niklasdorf.

The event showed that the research institutions Montanuniversitaet Leoben and Joanneum Research are the centres of modern coating research in Austria. The expertise and state-of-the-art infrastructure make these institutions the first point of contact for innovative enterprises.

Thanks are due to the Federal Ministry for Economy, Family and Youth for the support of the event as well as Research Studios Austria, the Federal Nano Initiative and the Austrian Research Promotion Agency FFG as well as the Province of Styria with its initiatives Nanonet Styria and Materials Cluster Styria.
