More than 280 participants from 11 countries attended the Austrian Foundry Congress and Exhibition at the Montanuniversitaet Leoben on April 14th and 15th. The congress, which was held for 55th time, is one of the biggest international conferences taking place in Leoben.

In addition to the 280 regular participants, the Higher Technical Schools of Leoben and Kapfenberg joined the conference with more than 90 high school students. For the prospective high school graduates, the congress provided the perfect setting to learn more about the subject of foundry, and the perspectives it holds in the industry and on job market.

The organizers, Gerhard Schindelbacher from the Austrian Foundry Research Institute and Prof. Peter Schumacher from the Chair of Casting Research at the Montanuniversitaet, believe that the great interest and the high turnout over the past years derive not only from the outstanding quality of the talks and lectures, but also from the comprehensive and interesting supporting programme. Due to the ongoing efforts, the Austrian Foundry Congress has become an event of excellent reputation in the German-speaking world, as it provides a wonderful venue for foundry and casting experts and an excellent platform for exchange.

For two days and in a total of 20 presentation, the subject of “cost and quality relevant factors in foundries“ was discussed, giving comprehensive insights and information on saving potentials in the fields of energy, materials, costs and plant management, as well as the latest developments in the areas of metallurgy, casting technology, and future optimisation procedures for casting processes and cast parts.

In addition to the excellent quality of the lecturers, the success of the conference can also be credited to the great atmosphere, and the state-of-the-art conference facilities available at the Montanuniversitaet. In particular, the traditional Caster's Evening on Thursday provided plenty of entertainment and opportunities to exchange with colleagues in a casual atmosphere.

The participants also had the opportunity to obtain information on the latest technologies and products of 21 companies at the trade fair which was took place at the same time. This is a major achievement, considering that the world’s largest foundry trade fair (GIFA) will soon take place in Düsseldorf this June, and is considered the most important venue for the foundry industry.
