For the 7th time now, the Montanuniversitaet Leoben is hosting the student competition "Austrian Young Physicists’ Tournament (AYPT)", attracting more than 110 young physicists from all over the world.

The tournament in Leoben is a qualifying competition for the international physicists’ tournament, and is organized in cooperation with the high school “Neues Gymnasium” in Leoben, along with the Research Forum of Young Physicists which is also involved in the preparations. School teams from all over Austria as well as international teams from Russia, Slovakia, Iran, the Czech Republic, Turkey and Belarus participate in the Leoben tournament. The best national team will represent Austria at this year’s international tournament in Teheran. "In 2009, the best Austrian teams achieved an excellent second place, which was the best result that Austria has ever accomplished since the beginning of the tournaments," Dipl.-Ing. Georg Hofferek from the Research Forum said.

With the Eyes of a Scientist
The participating teams are required to prepare 17 scientific tasks. During the tournament, teams present their reports and discuss and defend their solutions against an opposing team. The entire competition is executed in English. By looking at complex scientific problems, for which not even experts may have ad-hoc solutions, students find themselves in the same situation as regular scientists. During the preparation phase, students try to gain as much knowledge and information about the problems as possible; they hypothesize, work on physical and mathematical models, create computer simulations and often contact universities for assistance. During the preparation, students often get very much involved in the topic, and many participants eventually decide to study engineering or science. "For us, this event is a great opportunity to introduce young and gifted students to the engineering programmes that the Montanuniversitaet Leoben offers", Rector Wolfhard Wegscheider said.

Theory and Creative Experiments
"The advancement of performing scientific-creative experiments, forming concepts and associating with international universities and research facilities are the focus and goal of the tournament", Dr. Haas, physicist and coordinator, said. "In addition, making decisions, being able to work in a team and being fluent in another language are further aspects of this competition that are crucial."
The jurors come from the Montanuniversitaet Leoben, the University of Graz, Vienna and Salzburg, as well as the Vienna and Graz University of Technology. The official opening of the tournament takes place on Thursday, May 5th, 2011 at 6.00 pm at the auditorium of the Montanuniversitaet Leoben.
