Dipl.-Ing- Astrid Arnberger, alumna and young scientist at the Institute of Sustainable Waste Management and Technology at the Montanuniversitaet Leoben, won the poster competition at the Austrian Waste Management Conference 2011 in Graz. Among the 36 participants, there were representatives from science, public authorities, and universities. “With her success, Ms. Arnberger has proven that the Montanuniversitaet is still one of the most renowned and best universities in the field of waste management, environmental technology and recycling in Austria", Prof. Karl Lorber said. The title of the poster was “Recycling of lithium-ion batteries from electric- and hybrid vehicles”, which is also Arnberger’s dissertation subject. "This topic is of utmost importance these days", Lorber said. "With the electric vehicle mobilization of road traffic, we can contribute to climate protection. Due to the growing electric mobilization, the amount of reusable and recyclable lithium-ion batteries (LIB) will grow significantly. Thus, our future goal is to recycle LIBs of electric and hybrid vehicles, and eventually restore the material flow. The Austrian Waste Management Conference of ÖWAV (Austrian Water and Waste Management Association), hosting about 300 participants, is one of the biggest events of its kind in Austria, and specifically targets stakeholders from the waste management sectors of municipalities, public facilieties, recycling companies, plant manufacturers and landfill operators. The conference provides young scientists with a platform to present their fields of research, and provides the Dipl.-Ing. Astrid Arnberger, born in Vienna, finished her studies in Industrial Environmental Protection with distinction. Since 2010, she has been working as a Research Associate at the Institute of Sustainable Waste Management and Technology. Her fields of studies are waste management technologies, resource recovery and recycling. Further information: Dipl.-Ing.
