Multiple Awards for Montanuniversitaet Leoben Print
Over the past few days, members of the Montanuniversitaet Leoben have received a number of awards. At award ceremonies in Styria and Vienna, Cracow and Nice as well as the USA, the Montanuniversitaet displayed its excellency in research and teaching.

Advancement Award of the Theodor Körner Funds
Dr. David Holec, University Assistant at the Chair of Physical Metallurgy and Materials Testing, started the "award season" on April 28th, 2011. In the festive hall at the University of Vienna, Holec was presented with the Advancement Award of the Theodor Körner Funds worth 1,500 euros by Austrian President Heinz Fischer. The project was titled "Understanding the response of filled carbon nanotubes to an applied external stimulus".

Poster Competition in Boston
In Boston, Massachusetts, Dipl.-Ing. Ramesh Kumar Selvansankar, Research Associate at the Chair of Polymer Processing, won 1st place of the “Graduate Student Poster Competition” during the "Annual Technical Conference (ANTEC) 2011". The largest international conference for polymer engineers is organized by the "Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE)", and took place from May 1st to 5th, 2011. The importance of this international conference was highlighted by the large number of scientific contributions, over 100 posters and approx. 700 presentations were on the agenda . Besides the winning project "Injection molding machine rheometer to study the rheological behaviour of polymer melts at very high shear-rates“, Kumar also presented his work on "Numerical modelling of flow conical co-rotating twin screw extruder".

Saubermacher Award
On May 10th, in the course of the opening ceremony of the new company headquarters "Ecoport" of the Saubermacher company, the "Hans Roth Umweltpreis" worth 2,000 euros, was awarded to the best dissertations at the University of Graz, the Vienna University of Technology, and the Montanuniversitaet Leoben. Dipl.-Ing. Michael Zmek, representing the Montanuniversitaet, received the award for his work "Auto shredder plants: implantation of the EU end-of-life vehicle regulation" (Chair of Waste Treatment Technologies and Landfilling).

EMRS Award

Dipl-Ing. Richard Rachbauer, doctoral student in the working group "Nano-structured materials" under the supervision of Prof. Paul H. Mayrhofer, received the Young Scientist Award at the spring meeting of the European Materials Research Society (EMRS) in Nice. The submitted publication "Increased Thermal Stability of Ti-Al-N thin films by Ta alloying" was presented during the international conference with more than 4,000 participants, and was recognized as an excellent work in the field of thin-layer technology.

Honorary Medal of Cracow AGH
Dr. Krystyna Spiradek-Hahn, Head of the Alloy Development Group Seibers dorf, a working group which joined the Montanuniversitaet last year, was given the Honorary Medal of the Faculty of Metals Engineering and Industrial Computer Science of Cracow AGH on May 13th. She received this award for her excellent scientific cooperation with the Department Physical and Powder Metallurgy, her co-operation with student training and the research project "Materials for energy systems".
