At the Montanuniversitaet, 13 doctoral degree candidates were recognized and received their doctoral degrees during the commencement ceremony in the Archduke Johann Building on July 1st, 2011. The graduation ceremony was complemented with the presentation of various awards and scholarships. In his address titled "Sustainability and Education for the World", Rector Wolfhard Wegscheider stressed that the pursuit of sustainability was a perpetual object of research that should be at the heart of all human actions. "Enormous research tasks lie ahead of us which also involve challenges in education." A "conservative strategy" in the pursuit of sustainability might be "the leading option for action, with less material, less energy, and in order to make the shortage less painful, less demand", Wegscheider said. Being content with less was a prerequisite to contain the unmanageable growth of humankind, for wich education "is the only realistic solution", the Rector said. "And don’t forget: there’s no lack of primary energy in the world. This is an important consideration when it comes to preventing resource bottlenecks. In any case, the expansion of transition technologies should be avoided at any costs, including nuclear power stations or hybrid vehicles. The term ‘transition technology’ is simply the antonym of sustainability”, Wegscheider said. |
