During a festive academic ceremony, Federal President Heinz Fischer conferred the Doctorate of Montanistic Sciences "sub auspiciis praesidentis" on Dipl.-Ing. Christoph Kirchlehner. Only students who have concluded their high school education and passed their school leaving exams with distinction, accomplished the best possible results on all exams over the course of their university studies, and concluded their doctorate studies as well as their dissertation and viva voce with distinction, are admitted as candidates for the “sub auspiciis” graduation. Christoph Kirchlechner was born in 1982 in Rum near Innsbruck, and attended the higher technical vocational school in Saalfelden with a focus on mechanical engineering. From 2003 to 2008, he studied materials sciences at the Montanuniversitaet Leoben. Subsequently, Kirchlechner finished his doctoral studies at the Erich-Schmid Institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Since 2008, he has been working as scientific staff at the institute. In his address and in the presence of numerous guests of honour, Federal President Heinz Fischer recognized the high standards that young scientists set, and referred to the high degree of perseverance and reliability that is necessary in order to achieve a doctorate "sub auspiciis praesidentis". "The Montanuniversitaet Leoben with its unique study programmes in particular provides answers and solutions to the central issues and demands of the 21st century", Fischer said, and expressed his thanks and recognition to the newly graduated Doctor of Montanistic Sciences for his extraordinary achievements. Dr. Christoph Kirchlechner directed his words of thanks at his family, friends and his supervisor Prof. Gerhard Dehm as well as at his "alma mater leobiensis" that provided him with the perfect conditions for accomplishing this academic degree. "The only thing that worries me on this happy day is the fact that the Austrian educational policy does not meet the demands of our times and society at all, and that the facilities of the Austrian Academy of Sciences – of which the Erich-Schmid Institute is part – is suffering from massive financial problems “,Kirchlechner said.
