What is a Content Management System?

A Content Management System (CMS) is a user-optimized and comfortable system for the management of contents. The contents, such as images, texts, widgets are stored in a database and so they are easy available for the user via an operator interface.

Web Content Management System

A special area of the CM-systems are the Web Content Management Systems (WCMS). These systems are used to administrate web contents. They are used exclusively or predominantly with the publication of the contents from websites.

Larger content management systems offer besides the publication of the websites in HTML-format also the possibility to export the contents in other publication formats (for example XML, PDF, prepress..).

What is Joomla?

Joomla is a highly productive, easy configured and popular Open-Source-Web-Content-Management-System (WCMS). Open-Source-Software is free software, which source-code is for everybody available. It is free to copy, distribute and change the source-code. Joomla is subjected to the general terms and conditions of GNU General Public License and is without cost.
The system is based on the server performed script language PHP. The contents of the website are stored in a MySQL-Database.
The meaning of the term “Joomla” comes from the Suaheli word „Jumla“. This means translated “in a body, en masse” or “at large“and symbolizes the development-community (open-source-community).
