CAMPUSonline
a flexible information and resource management software system The information and resource management software system CAMPUSonline (MUonline) was developed in 1997 at the technical university in Graz to map business processes of science and research. The system has been developed in cooperation with all institutes of the university and was an attempt to provide a comfortable, clearly arranged surface according to the point of view of all users. Currently, the system is available in many different universities in Austria. The system provides information about staff members, faculty, students and the administration staff of the university, as well as information about all resources such as rooms, buildings and all kind of education data (courses, exams, descriptions, appointments) and for the studies in general (curriculums, etc.). In addition, all kind of publication data, research projects or abstracts of bachelor, diploma and master thesis are managed. CAMPUSonline is based on an Oracle database; the processing of data can be done everywhere and anytime via internet over a web interface. On the one hand, the system is used for data presentation, especially in the area of science and research. For anonymous users it is primarily an information system, where curriculums, details to all kind of studies and courses, and publications etc. can be found easily. Another essential aspect is decentralized data processing; e.g. description of courses through the lecturers itself. Furthermore, there is the transparency of data which comes directly from the researcher. This leads to higher data quality according to actuality, integrity and completeness. Account, authorization and rights management can be done decentralized directly by the individual institutes. Authorization is extreme flexible and easy, and can be adjusted to the requirements of the university. University staff/faculty members are able to arrange nearly all kind of activities, which are connected with their study or work. The students are able to sign up for courses and exams online, look up their exam results, print their exam and study certificates or put in their thesis abstracts. Lecturers are able to administrate appointments, exams and communicate with the participants of a course. On the other hand, the research documentation is a basis for the knowledge balance. The knowledge balance focuses the strategic aspect of knowledge in enterprises. This and many other aspects conduce to the implementation of the Bologna guidelines (e.g. displaying ECTS-Credits, ECTS-Management, tools for course and study evaluation). In conclusion there is a transparency of the system, which should support an exchange between subjects and universities. Moreover, the system offers a continuing database for projects and contacts. |
