The United States dominate the list with 15 universities in the top 35; the United Kingdom has six ranked universities; Montanuniversität Leoben is the only German-speaking university ranked in the top 35.

The results of the ranking are based on six major indicators: academic reputation, admission eligibility, job placement rate, recruiter feedback, specialization, global reputation and influence. Data for these indicators are collected from surveys with students, alumni and industry professionals as well as from each university’s parameters.

McDougall School of Petroleum Engineering at the University of Tulsa (USA, 98.7 points) tops the list; the University of Aberdeen (UK, 98.5 points) is number two, followed by Montanuniversität with 98.3 points. The maximum number of points that could be awarded was 100.

Wilfried Eichlseder, rector of Montanuniversität, expressed his satisfaction and comments: “Some years ago, we were ranked 7 th in the world in Materials Science, in Petroleum Engineering we are now even in the top 3. I think that these outcomes affirm our commitment to focus on high-quality teaching and research.

Over 60 years of Petroleum Engineering in Leoben

It was only last year that Petroleum Engineering celebrated its 60 th anniversary by opening a new state-of-the-art building. Over the last few years many achievements were made such as the numerous Excellence programmes which were launched with OMV as well as the establishment of the “International Petroleum Academy”. Only recently, the department of Petroleum Engineering entered into a cooperation agreement with LUKOIL, the largest Russian oil group in the private sector.
