New Pump Stand Rig Inaugurated

On 5 November 2015, an expiramental pump stand rig was inaugurated at the Raw Materials Centre.

Der neue Pumpenteststand wurde getauft. V.l.n.r.: Dr. Clemens Langbauer, Dipl.-Ing. Christopher Veit (OMV), Univ.-Prof. Dr. Herbert Hofstätter, Dr. Leopold Lippert (OMV)

As the price of oil is declining, it is more vital than ever to produce oil in an economic way. With foresight, Montanuniversität Leoben and OMV Exploration & Production have thus launched a research project in 2013 that focuses on the efficiency of borehole pumps.

A unique expiramental pump stand rig has now been erected at the Raw Materials Centre in Leoben, allowing for extensive research in close collaboration with industry.

The rig is set up at a 10-meter-deep shaft and will simulate the functionality of sucker-rod pumps as a first step. Scientific findings will be used to improve the design of pumps as well as the process design in order to achieve a sustainable reduction of cost per barrel of oil.

Besides the Department of Petroleum Engineering, the Institute of Electrical Engineering and other departments will use the pump stand rig for their research.
