An application for leave of absence can be submitted for one of the following reasons:

  • Illness that demonstrably hinders the progress of studies (confirmation from a specialist);
  • Pregnancy (confirmation from a specialist);
  • Childcare obligations or other similar care obligations (registration form and birth certificate of the person to be cared for, own registration form and birth certificate and affidavit);
  • Completion of a voluntary social year (corresponding confirmation);
  • Temporary impairment in connection with a disability (disability pass from the Federal Social Welfare Office with at least 50% disability);
  • Study or research abroad (corresponding confirmation);
  • Other special social reasons (corresponding proof).

The documents in brackets must be attached to the application.

Application

The leave of absence must be applied for by the beginning of the respective semester at the latest. In the event the reasons for the leave of absence ("illness", "pregnancy", "childcare obligations or other similar care obligations" or "temporary impairment in connection with a disability") arise unforeseeably and unavoidably, the application for the leave of absence can also be submitted during the semester (§67 para. 2 UG 2002).

The signed leave of absence form and the relevant supporting documents and confirmations must be sent to the SSC by e-mail or post or handed in personally at the reception desk of the Study Support Center.

Implications of leave of absence

During the leave of absence, admission to the degree programme remains in effect, and participation in courses, taking examinations and the submission and assessment of academic papers and artistic Master's and diploma theses are not permitted (§67 para. 3 UG 2002).

Students who are on a leave of absence do not have to pay tuition fees. Because students who are on a leave of absence are obliged to register the continuation of their studies and thus remain members of the ÖH, they must pay the ÖH fee for the semester they are on a leave of absence.
