What do we mean by logistics?
In our globalised world, products, services and information are often created across different continents and yet their components still have to come together at exactly the right time. Industrial logisticians are responsible for getting the right products ready at the right time in the right place with the right level of quality and in the right quantities – and the customer is always right!
'Just in time‘ means that components from subcontractors will be delivered directly to the assembly belt only when required; the timing needs to be as accurate as possible to save money. As such, logistics play a particularly significant role in a company‘s success. They represent the link between procurement, production and the consumer.
What skills and interests do I need?
How do goods, information or energy move around the world? What makes a perfect production process in a business? How does an online retailer manage to deliver goods within 24 hours?
To achieve success in this field of study, you must be interested in business administration and technical processes, but also have an interest in the field of communication and information technology. As a future industrial logistician, you should be happy to work on projects as a team.
What can I expect during my studies?
On the Bachelor programme of study, you will acquire a scientific and technical knowledge base and focus on the following areas:
- Logistics and process management
- Business administration
- Information technology
On the Masters programme, which lasts for four semesters, you can deepen your knowledge in two further specialist areas, choosing from the following:
- Logistics management
- Computational optimisation
- Logistics systems engineering
What can I expect after my studies?
As an industrial logistician with a powerful combination of business and technical skills, you are armed to face any challenge that the markets can throw at you. Typical employment sectors include materials management, supply chain planning and control (supply chain management), industrial procurement, organisation and process management, information technology and waste disposal. Your skills will also be useful to companies working with warehouse automation, transportation and conveying technology and container management. These sectors include the heavy industry, raw materials industry, electronics industry and logistics service providers.
