What makes this study exceptional?
Education in Materials Science and Engineering requires first a multidisciplinary approach to encourage the exploitation of knowledge focusing on “entrepreneurship, information and communications technology skills, multi-disciplinarity and creativity”.
The double degree master’s programme „Advanced Materials Science and Engineering“ is an engineering degree (4 semesters / 120 ECTS) in the field of materials science and engineering in an international university environment with intensive networking of research and teaching between six partner universities. These are the Universität des Saarlandes (UdS, GER), Lulea Tekniska Universitet (LTU, SWE), Université de Lorraine (UL, FRA), Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC, ESP), Università degli Studi di Padova (UPD ITA) and the Montanuniversität Leoben (MUL, AT).
The students spend the first two semesters at one of these universities and the third semester at a second partner university. In the fourth semester, a master's thesis is written at one of the two universities. A particularity of the AMASE programme is that students have to study in two different languages by selecting the corresponding university (Spanish at UPC, French at UL, German at UdS and English at LTU, MUL and UPD).
What requirements do you have to bring along?
The Joint European Master Programme in Advanced Materials Science and Engineering (AMASE) is aimed at students who have already obtained their Bachelor in Materials Science, Materials Engineering or other related Engineering Sciences, as well as Physics, Chemistry or other Natural Sciences. In any case, bachelor studies in Materials Science, Polymer Engineering and Science, Mechanical Engineering and Metallurgy at Montanunivesität Leoben are suitable.
Requirement for admission to the AMASE programme is the proof of excellent English skills. For a successful study progress, knowledge of a second language is beneficial.
What can I expect during my studies?
AMASE intends to provide excellent background knowledge in materials science as well as in experimental methods provided by top-level research facilities in the consortium. The main objective of AMASE in the academic/technical aspect is to provide high-level academic and research-oriented education in materials science and engineering. The studies are divided in two phases: an adaptation phase (1st semester) and a specialization phase (2nd and 3rd semester). The adaptation phase is divided into three different modules and the specialization phase into five specialization Tracks:
- Track 1: Advanced metallic materials
- Track 2: Polymers and composites
- Track 3: Smart surfaces and functional materials
- Track 4: Advanced processing technologies
- Track 5: Bio/Nanomaterials
Each module consists of some compulsory courses and some elective courses that may be chosen by the students, in accordance with their previous studies, advised by the local tutor. In addition to the study programme, language courses and other training courses are offered to increase the students' communication skills.
What can I do after graduation?
The career prospects for AMSE graduates are excellent. Typical areas of work are the steel and light metal industry, the processing of special and refractory metals, the automotive, aviation and polymer industries, semiconductors and microelectronics, communication technology, medical technology and the food industry. AMASE's cultural exchange gives the student enormous advantages on the (academic) job market, benefits from personal growth and learns at least one new language.
