Industrial Data Science

Digging Data

Relevant information is virtually the gold of our time. Data scientists are always on the lookout for that vein of gold deep inside the mountains of data. Once this is found, the relevant information is sorted and analysed so that it can then be used as the basis for business decisions.

Thanks to Industrial Data Science, technological progress is significantly influenced, for example in the development of new materials or in waste management through intelligent waste sorting. Safety is also increased in many areas of work through data monitoring and analysis, e.g. in infrastructure such as tunnels, bridges, or railroad systems and other technical plants and machines.

The right programme for you?

Industrial Data Science sounds too nerdy for you? Does it have you feeling like you are part of the scenes of the Matrix? Yes and no... well, Data science does have to do with numbers, algorithms, computers and searching for the needle in a haystack. If data scientists are anything, they are curious!

As a future data scientist, you will be responsible for fundamental decisions in companies. If you are interested in technology, are responsible and can easily keep track of things, you already have important basic requirements.

What can you expect in the Industrial Data Science programme?

The special feature of Industrial Data Science at Montanuniversität Leoben is its strong link between technical understanding and the ability to apply analytical methods. You will definitely need the basics for this and you’ll learn them in the first four semesters.

After that, you will continue your education in high-tech areas such as sensor technology, cloud services, simulation, artificial intelligence and machine learning. Basic business knowledge is also part of your studies here. You’ll also learn how to program and create and further develop algorithms. You will then put your new skills and acquired know-how to the test in a practical project.

What can you expect after your course of study?

As a data scientist in Leoben, you will have learned to support decision-makers by processing and analysing big data. You develop new sustainable business models with the help of digitalisation and improve technical processes.

The development of projects in the areas of data mining and machine learning is also part of your job. In the logistics industry, you use data science to improve work processes and thus increase the quality and eco-efficiency of transport services. Technology companies need your know-how for the development of artificial intelligence and the energy sector also needs you for intelligent energy networks.
