Our Vision

Understanding and developing new technical materials is key to future technologies and maintains competitiveness in Austria. This is particularly true in research areas such as quantum technologies, microelectronics, energy generation as well as storage, lightweight construction applications, medical technology and aerospace. In addition to experimental investigations, modeling and simulation of material behavior are increasingly being used for this purpose. With its wide range of courses, international research excellence, and close industry collaborations, the Montanuniversität Leoben offers the ideal conditions for mastering todays technological challenges. In order to coordinate cooperation of both, researchers in the manifold field of materials science within the Montanuniversität Leoben as well with external partners, the Cluster of Excellence: Materials was launched at the beginning of 2026.
