Scholarships and Awards

The following scholarships are offered to students of Montanuniversität Leoben by various sponsoring organisations:

Adolf Feizlmayr Scholarship

Adolf Feizlmayr founded this scholarship in order to support international students studying at Montanuniversität Leoben. The Scholarship is given once or twice a year via the university gazette. After discussing with a board of advisors, the rectorate decides on the size of the grant. Applications are to be handed in at the rectors office (Ms. Stabler), according to the details given by the gazette.

Em.Hochschulprofessor Dr. Rudolf Posselt'sche Reisefonds [travel fund]

Prof. Dr. Rudolf Posselt gives the university a travel scholarship, known as the Posselt'sche Reisefond. The aim of this fund is to provide financial support to engineering and mining graduates who are Austrian citizens and have graduated from their standard course at Montanuniversität Leoben with distinction. The scholarship is to be used to support student trips as part of scientific training for research activities. The Chair of Industrial Logistics provides information regarding applications.

Support scholarship

The aim of the support scholarship is to provide financial aid to degree programme students for ongoing theses or dissertations that involve an above-average financial outlay (e.g. staying in a foreign country, participating in a conference, undertaking expensive research). Support scholarships are announced annually through the University Gazette (German: Mitteilungsblatt) according to the law on student funding. Application documents are to be submitted to the Chair of Mathematics and Statistics.

Hans-Theisbacher foundation

This foundation was set up in remembrance of Hans Theisbacher, the former CEO and representative of Radex Austria in Australia, and the award is given to outstanding degree/Masters theses relating to fire-resistant materials by graduates who have completed their studies with particular distinction at Montanuniversität Leoben. The award is judged by a board of trustees and has been given annually since 1992/93. Applications are to be submitted to the Chair of Ceramics.

Hellmut-Longin award

The Hellmut-Longin award is intended to support outstanding scientific work in the mineralogy field. It is therefore given for outstanding dissertations and post-doctoral lecturing theses submitted to and/or worked on as part of the Chair of Ceramics at Montanuniversität Leoben. Applications are to be submitted to O.Univ.-Prof. Dr. Harald Harmuth in the Chair of Ceramics.

Vehicle industry anniversary scholarship

The anniversary scholarship was set up by the Austrian Vehicle Industry Association [Fachverband der Fahrzeugindustrie Österreichs] and is awarded to Mechanical Engineering students whose degree theses/dissertations have qualified a maximum of 3 years before the start of the submission deadline for the vehicle industry anniversary scholarship. Excellence scholarship

The excellence scholarship recognises and rewards outstanding academic achievements of Austrian degree programme students or degree programme students granted equal status according to §4 of the law on student funding. Excellence scholarships are announced annually through the University Gazette (German: Mitteilungsblatt) according to the law on student funding. Application documents are to be submitted to the Chair of Mathematics and Statistics.

Marshall Plan anniversary scholarship

The Marshall Plan Foundation awards scholarships to Montanuniversität students who want to go on a research exchange trip to a US partner university and to US visiting students at Montanuniversität. Priority is given to students in the final stage of their programme. Montanuniversität select the students.
They receive EUR 3,000 to EUR 10,000 for three to five months, depending on the duration and requirements of the study/research programme.

OMV Excellence Master Scholarship

The OMV scholarship for the MSc in Petroleum Engineering supports students by covering various tuition and living costs including a laptop, an exclusive internship and support from your OMV mentor. There is no obligation to pay back.

Scholarship for international students

Montanuniversität Leoben supports specific international degree programme students. The scholarship is announced once or twice a year through the University Gazette (German: Mitteilungsblatt; German title of the Mitteilungsblatt: Ausschreibung von Stipendien an Studierende bestimmter ausländischer Staaten und Gebiete) and granted in accordance with the recommendation of an advisory board. Applications are ranked according to the students’ performance. Application documents are to be submitted to the Office of the Rectorate (Ms. Stabler) according to the requirements set out in the announcement.

Call for applications for WKO Styria research scholarships 2023/24 for universities and universities of applied sciences

In the academic year 2023/24, the Styrian Chamber of Commerce awards a total of 22 research scholarships for Master's and diploma theses at universities and universities of applied sciences in Styria with 1 x EUR 2,100 for the student and EUR 500 for the chair/institute to which the supervisor belongs. The work must have been started after 01.01.2023. 
In addition, the winner of the additional prize "WKO Research Prize for Young Scientists" (in the amount of € 1,000) for the work with the highest economic relevance will be selected from the group of scholarship holders. 

Application forms can be downloaded from here or will be sent electronically by the Study Support Centre (studkan(at)unileoben.ac.at) on request. Questions can also be answered by the Study Support Center at studkan@unileoben.ac.at. The deadline for applications is 20.10.2023 (receipt at the Study Support Center).

Applications received by the deadline will be collected and ranked at the Study Support Center and forwarded to the WKO Steiermark. A jury consisting of a total of 12 members (three representatives of the WKO Styria and one representative of each of the Styrian universities) will make a selection of the thesis projects based on the preliminary selection of the universities and will decide on the awarding of the scholarships. The meeting of the expert jury is expected to take place in December 2023. The selected scholarship holders will be announced by the WKO Steiermark immediately after the jury meeting. Each higher education institution will receive at least one scholarship, provided there are corresponding applications.

In the summer semester of 2024 (June or July), a closing event will take place with the scholarship holders and their families, the representatives of the universities, the jury members, the supervisors and the representatives of the WKO Styria (date and place to be announced).
