After my vocational training to become a kindergarten teacher, I wanted to pursue my second biggest passion: science. I ultimately chose to study Mechanical Engineering and am still fascinated by the diverse educational areas. I felt comfortable and welcome right from the very beginning.
No selection process
At some Austrian universities, different selection procedures have been introduced for a variety of study programmes in order to reduce the number of first-year students embarking on their studies. Our study programmes at Leoben are not affected by this issue, there is no selection process and enrollment is simple. All students with school-leaving certificates can enroll at the Technical University of Leoben.
Orientation Phase (STEOP)
In the first six weeks of the winter semester, within the framework of the "STEOP", the courses "Basic academic skills" and "Introduction to STEM subjects" are completed.
In "Basic academic skills", the essentials of rhetoric and presentation technology or how to work with Microsoft Office applications are taught.
The course "Introduction to STEM subjects" offers an overview of the basic science and mathematics required for the field of study. In addition to becoming familiar with the basic terms in the respective subjects,
first-year students will also gain an understanding of the thematic interconnection of the various subjects. If you have any questions, students from higher semesters are also available here to help you complete the ‘STEOP’ in November.
Further information on starting your studies can be found in the Study Support Centre (SSC):
First year of common studies
Every beginning is easy! The first year of study is the same for everyone, so that at the end of the first year, students can easily change their field of study without ‘losing time.’ During these first two semesters, first-year students from different types of schools are brought up to a uniform level.
In this ‘onboarding phase,’ you are expected to acquire the basic tools you need to make the world a better place in the future through new technologies.
During the course of study, courage and creativity for science and research must be developed– and as a small university, the Technical University of Leoben offers the best conditions for this, e.g. within the framework of the new and innovative ‘Do-it Labs’. In addition to practical applications, the curriculum initially focuses on fundamentals such as physics, mathematics, computer applications and programming, chemistry and mechanics.
MINT@Leoben – a head start in your first year of study
To make it easier for you to start your first year of study, we invite our first semester students to the MINT@Leoben event in the winter semester. MINT is the abbreviation for the subjects of mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology. MINT@Leoben takes place one week before the start of the semester. The event is a support service for getting into the MINT subjects and provides valuable insights for first-year students.
New in town? Not for long
As part of the ÖH-Tutorium all first-year students are supported by higher semester students. New friendships are quickly formed that often last a lifetime.
Graduating as a Master of Science
All study programmes grant a Bachelor of Science degree after 7 semesters. This is followed by more in-depth master's programmes (4 semesters) and a subsequent master's thesis (ending with the academic title "Diplomingenieur", equivalent to a Master of Science). Afterwards, students can opt for a doctoral degree (6 semesters).
During their studies, all students are required to complete an internship at a company that is relevant to their fields of studies.
Excellent career prospects
The Technical University of Leoben is traditionally closely associated with industry and economics. With a large number of projects in cooperation with various companies, students are integrated very early into a network that will later provide them with a head start into the professional world. Thanks to the strong application-orientated style of instruction, students are always kept abreast of the latest developments and rapidly find themselves at home in their vocations.
The unique education offered at the Technical University of Leoben also means that it occupies a special position in the international education market. Graduates of Leoben are in greater demand than ever before – and industry is in need of even more experts.
