Petroleum Engineering

International Study Program (EN)

Energy solutions for the future go deep

Do you want to know how to drill a borehole through layers of rock kilometres deep? How to keep oil and gas fields productive for decades or how to tap into geothermal energy? On the English-language Master's degree programme in Petroleum Engineering at the Technical University of Leoben, you will deal intensively with these questions.

Whether drilling technology, production or reservoir management, you will learn how to plan, monitor and further develop highly complex systems. With state-of-the-art technology, sound theory and direct practical relevance.

What to expect from the study programme?

The Master in Petroleum Engineering is based on the standards of leading universities in the Anglo-American region and combines scientific depth with clear practical relevance.

You will deepen your knowledge in one of the three specialisations:

  • Drilling Engineering
You will develop borehole designs, analyse drilling process dynamics and manage deep drilling projects, from initial planning to evaluation in the field.

  • Petroleum Production Engineering
You will design production systems, manage natural gas storage facilities, extend the service life of oil and gas fields and utilise geothermal energy sources.

  • Reservoir Engineering
You will check geological models, carry out field studies and develop strategies for efficient reservoir management.

All courses are taught in English. The international orientation is also promoted by exchange programmes. And through industry internships, you will apply your knowledge in real projects during your studies, in direct contact with companies in the sector.

What are your career opportunities?

With your degree, you will have a wide range of national and international career paths open to you, both in the technical and strategic fields. You will be ready to work on drilling and production rigs, in planning offices, at consultancies or in research departments.

Typical fields of activity:

  • Drilling technology, reservoir and production technology
  • Planning and monitoring of deep drilling projects
  • Pipeline and plant construction
  • Energy storage, geothermal utilisation, special civil engineering
  • Consulting and international project development
  • Research & development
