First Autumn School on Geoenergy and Petroleum Engineering

From October 1st to 7th 2026 the first Autumn School on Geoenergy and Petroleum Engineering was successfully held at TU Leoben. It was hosted by the Department Geoenergy for China University of Petroleum-Beijing (CUPB). This inaugural program brought together 13 students and one accompanying teacher from CUPB for a week of academic exchange, laboratory visits, a geothermal energy field excursion and many cultural activities in Leoben.

The Autumn School aimed to provide participants with a broad introduction to geoenergy and petroleum engineering, combining academic lectures with practical insights into research facilities and real-world energy applications. It also offered an opportunity to strengthen connections between the two universities and foster international exchange among students, researchers, and academic staff.

Academic Lectures and Research Facility Visits

The program featured lecture sessions covering a range of topics from drilling engineering, rock mechanics, petrophysics, geothermal systems, energy geoscience to many other cutting‑edge topics. In addition to the lectures, the CUPB delegation visited research facilities at the university, including the drilling and reservoir lab, rock mechanics- and petrophysics lab. These visits provided insights into experimental facilities, engineering technologies and ongoing research activities, while encouraging discussions between students and academic staff.

A further highlight of the Autumn School was a field excursion to Vienna, where the delegation visited an energy facility to learn about geothermal energy systems and their role in Austria's energy transition. The visit connected theoretical knowledge with practical engineering applications and provided opportunities for technical discussions and knowledge exchange.

Beyond the academic program the autumn school introduced its participants to Austrian traditions while creating opportunities for informal interaction and intercultural exchange. The combination of academic learning and cultural experiences made it a valuable international experience for the visiting students.

A Successful Beginning for Future Cooperation

Building on this positive experience, CUPB expressed strong interest in further developing cooperation with TU Leoben. Potential directions include besides establishing the Autumn School as a regular exchange activity also exploring a joint laboratory and international research projects, creating opportunities for student exchanges and summer schools and discussing the feasibility of a master's double-degree program.

The Autumn School marks an important step toward strengthening the partnership between Technical University of Leoben and China University of Petroleum-Beijing. It establishes a foundation for future collaboration in education, research, and international exchange in geoenergy and related fields.
