Delegation from Beijing visits TU Leoben

A high-level delegation from the Beijing municipal government, accompanied by representatives from the China University of Mining and Technology, Beijing (CUMTB) and officials from the Chinese Embassy in Austria, visited the Technical University of Leoben to celebrate a new milestone in the long-standing partnership between CUMTB and TU Leoben.

The highlight of the visit was the inauguration of the new International Joint Laboratory for New Energy Science and Engineeringof CUMTB and Technical University of Leoben. This new platform will strengthen joint research and innovation in the field of sustainable energy and resource development.

During the ceremony, Rector Peter Moser and Vice Rector Thomas Prohaska warmly welcomed the delegation and emphasized the importance of international collaboration in higher education and research. The partnership between the Technical University of Leoben and CUMTB has been continuously expanded since its beginning in 2012. It now includes joint degree programs, student exchanges, and collaborative research projects.

Leoben City Councilor Willibald Mautner was also present at the event and gave a speech in which he expressed the city of Leoben's ongoing support for international academic cooperation.

Strong Partnership with many Milestones

Particular mention should be made of the ongoing commitment of Dr. Klaus Sapetschnig, one of the key players from the very beginning, when the early cooperation between the Technical University of Leoben, Sandvik, and Chinese partners began. The representatives of CUMTB also expressed their deep appreciation for the long-term partnership with TU Leoben, highlighting the mutual benefits and trust built up over more than a decade of collaboration.

Meanwhile, the Beijing municipal government reaffirmed its strong support for future cooperation between the two universities and encouraged further joint efforts in the areas of education, research, and innovation.

The Technical University of Leoben and CUMTB have achieved several milestones together, including the establishment of the international joint master's program “Advanced Mineral Resources Development” (AMRD) and most recently, the creation of the International College and the International Joint Laboratory for New Energy Science and Engineering. These initiatives underline a shared commitment to academic excellence, innovation and sustainable development.

The visit by the delegation from Beijing reaffirmed the strong ties between Austria and China in the fields of education and research and opened up new perspectives for future cooperation in the areas of energy, mining and advanced technologies.
