Delegation from Georgia visits TU Leoben

In September the Technical University of Leoben welcomed a high-ranking delegation from Georgia, underscoring the shared commitment to advancing mining education, research, and industrial cooperation.

The delegation consisted of high-ranking representatives from the Rich Metals Group and the Georgian Technical University (GTU): Giorgi Khetsuriani, Head of the Corporate Training Academy at Rich Metals Group and Associate Professor at GTU; Giorgi Chkheidze, Deputy CEO for HR Affairs; Archil Jaqeli, Deputy Production Director for Mining Technologies; and Revaz Lobzhanidze, Deputy Production Director for Geological Operations.

The program

The first day of the visit centered on academic exchange: accompanied by Dr. Riyaz Kharrat, the delegation began with meetings and laboratory tours led by Professor Michael Tost (Chair of Mining Engineering and Mineral Economics) and Associate Professor Marlene Villeneuve (Chair of Subsurface Engineering). Innovative approaches to mining operations and underground engineering were discussed. During the visit, possible research collaborations, mobility opportunities for students and specialized training programs were also discussed. In addition, current projects were presented in a meeting with Univ.-Prof. David Misch and Univ.-Prof. Reinhard Sachsenhofer (both Chair of Energy Geosciences) and future cooperation on the Applied Geology dual-degree program was explored. During a laboratory visit with Dr. Wolfgang Ofner (Chair of Mineral Processing), the delegation also gained valuable insights into advanced beneficiation and refining techniques.

On the second day of the visit the delegation toured the mining and beneficiation operations at VA Erzberg. The Technical University of Leoben sincerely thanks VA Erzberg for the generous hosting.

Outlook

The visit represents a significant step toward building a strong academic and industrial bridge between Austria and Georgia. Both sides reaffirmed their intention to expand joint research projects, training initiatives, and student exchanges. A return visit by Rector Peter Moser to GTU is already planned for March 2026 to further strengthen this growing partnership.
