Priv.Doz. DI Dr. Johanna Irrgeher from the Chair of General and Analytical Chemistry was elected as Chair of the IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) Commission for Atomic Abundances and Weights (CIAAW) for the period 2022-2026. She is the first woman to head the commission founded in 1899, in which internationally renowned researchers from the field of isotope research are active. For example, Francis Aston, Marie Curie, Georgii Flerov, Frederic Soddy and Georges Urbain were members of this commission.
The commission has the task of regularly revising and adapting the atomic weights of the chemical elements based on the careful evaluation of recent data. These standard atomic weights can then be found on all periodic tables of the world and are used uniformly internationally in industry, research and teaching. Johanna Irrgeher has been a member of this commission since 2013 and has long been the chair of the IUPAC sub-commission for isotope abundance measurements. She was unanimously elected chairwoman at the last commission meeting in 2021 and was confirmed as chairwoman by the IUAPC.
