The History of the University Wind Orchestra
Founded in 1856, the Bergkapelle Leoben-Seegraben is the oldest brass band in the city of Leoben and has always been closely connected to mining life. Until the closure of the Seegraben hard coal mine in 1964, it served as the company band – a musical companion to an era in which solidarity, discipline and reliability were not merely values, but part of everyday life. Over the decades, this tradition has evolved into an ensemble whose reputation extends far beyond the city limits. As a musical ambassador for Leoben and the Technical University of Leoben, the Bergkapelle has borne the title University Wind Orchestra since 2015. Today, it represents a vibrant link between students, alumni and music enthusiasts from Leoben and beyond.

University Orchestra
The institutionalized musical culture at the Technical University of Leoben began in the 1960s: At that time, student—and later Minister of Transport and presidential candidate—Rudolf Streicher founded both the University Choir, which still exists today, and the “Universitätsorchester Leoben”, a symphonic orchestra with strings and wind instruments. Since 1990, the artistic direction of the university orchestra has been in the hands of Mag. Heinz Moser, who also serves as Director of the Leoben Music School. Today, the orchestra primarily continues as a tradition-rich institution and is closely connected to the Symphonic Orchestra of Leoben; it usually gives one concert per year under the name “Universitätsorchester”. Although the orchestra is no longer offered as an independent course at the Technical University of Leoben, interested string players are still warmly invited to participate.

Percussion-Band: Nove Ponto Nove
Recently, a percussion ensemble has been established in close collaboration with the Leoben School of Music and Arts: Nove Ponto Nove. Numerous international students play in this samba percussion group, which is based in Leoben as a Brazilian–Austrian percussion band, and this has led to the development of a naturally close connection with the university. The group is led by Leoben-based drummer Christian Riegler, who also teaches at the Leoben School of Music and Art. The ensemble is organised as an Austrian-Brazilian cultural association and forms an additional link between the musical work of the Leoben School of Music and Art and student life.
