Recycling Technology

We Like Moving in Circles

Due to the globally increasing demand for raw materials, new solutions must be found to secure the supply. For far too long, devices such as computers, mobile phones or cars have simply been dumped when they no longer work or simply no longer meet customer requirements. Yet broken devices are true treasure troves of raw materials!

Your smartphone, for example, contains about 60 different raw materials, including metals such as copper, gold or rare earths. For instance, the latter are in great demand in the high-tech industry! The recycling of mobile phones and other devices therefore provides enormous opportunities: when materials are returned to the raw material cycle, CO2 emissions in production are significantly reduced. And that is good for the planet.

The right programme for you?

Yesterday's waste is today’s valuable raw materials; the field of recycling technology is diverse. Which is why, you should be able to approach problems courageously by thinking out of the box. A good chunk of curiosity will help you, too. Combining all of this with your interest in technology and economic-legal issues, means recycling technology is the right place for you to be!

What can you expect in the Recycling Technology programme?

Before you dive into the world of recycling, you will first be taught the scientific basics in the first four semesters. Your studies are interdisciplinary: as a recycling expert, you not only deal with the development and optimisation of recycling plants, but the composition and recycling possibilities of materials are also part of your field of knowledge. Landfill and urban mining still mean nothing to you? Not to worry – we'll teach you all about how these promising recycling concepts work. Just like the design of new products, because the recyclability of the product ultimately depends on design as well.

In the subsequent Master's degree programme, you will delve even deeper into the subject matter. Waste management, disposal logistics, processing technology for secondary raw materials, metal and plastics recycling and recycling-friendly product design are the main contents of the Master's degree programme in recycling technology. Working with digital processes, such as the simulation of recycling processes, will also be an important topic in your education.

What can you expect after your course of study?

It doesn’t matter whether your career is in innovative product design, in the metal industry, in the development of revolutionary recycling concepts or as a leader, as a recycling technician from the Montanuniversität Leoben, there are only open doors for you. With your work in recycling technology, you will combat a throwaway society and actively promote the zero-waste idea. Others only see waste, but you see the sustainable uses that can be found in it.
