On February 15, 2023, scientists from Montanuniversität met for a Hydrogen and Carbon brunch.

SCoRe A+ Hydrogen and Carbon (Hydrogen and Carbon)
The great potential of hydrogen to play a significant role in cross-sectoral decarbonization is currently inspiring a large number of research projects at a global level. At the Montanuniversität Leoben, the topic of hydrogen is inevitably linked to the valuable material carbon due to the research activities in the field of methane pyrolysis. Around 120 scientists from 23 different organizational units at the Montanuniversität are currently working on topics in the Strategic Core Research Area (SCoRe A+ Hydrogen and Carbon). The topics cover the entire value chain of the two valuable materials hydrogen and carbon: from production (pyrolysis and electrolysis) to transport and storage (from small-volume storage for mobile applications to large-volume storage in rock formations) as well as specific applications of hydrogen (e.g. metallurgy, mobility, chemical process engineering) and carbon (e.g. agriculture, building materials, highly porous storage media). Another important cross-cutting topic is the assessment of the effect of hydrogen in interaction with materials with regard to their corrosion and embrittlement as well as the targeted development of new materials.

A brunch that connects
The diversity of topics in the field of SCoRe A+ Hydrogen and Carbon enables interdisciplinary links as a basis for research into complex issues with regard to the development of future technologies. The networking of individual scientists from different disciplines is a basic prerequisite for fruitful cooperation. "There is hardly a better opportunity to start a scientific exchange than over a good breakfast in a pleasant atmosphere!" says Vice-Rector Peter Moser, who is delighted with the lively participation and is pleased with the remarkable development of the hydrogen and carbon topic area at Montanuniversität Leoben over the last two and a half years. "The brunch also serves as a platform for planning and coordinating further strategic activities and projects within the H2-C community," adds the coordinator of SCoRe A+ Hydrogen and Carbon Robert Obenaus-Emler from the Resources Innovation Center.

In addition to the scientific exchange, the Styrian-Bavarian specialist lecture by Prof. Thomas Kienberger (Chair of Energy Network Technology) and Prof. Markus Lehner (Chair of Process Engineering for Industrial Environmental Protection) provided exciting insights and discussions on the 'Transformation of the energy sector in light of the climate crisis'. Dr. Stefan Wibner from the non-ferrous metallurgy department gave the interested audience detailed insights into the current status of the expansion of the infrastructure in the field of hydrogen and carbon research activities at the Montanuniversität. Following the specialist presentations, the 'Spaghetti Challenge' also called for teamwork and skill - and of course the focus was on having fun!
