Feet on a bathroom scale

Hard to believe!

A scale does not measure kilograms! No kidding! But what does it measure then?

It measures the force with which gravity pushes us onto the scale in Newtons. Then it converts the result - taking into account the acceleration due to gravity - into kilograms. That's why an ordinary scale on the moon would show fewer kilograms, even though we have the same mass as on Earth.
